Boston Area Religious Women Leaders Speak Out against Human Trafficking
Boston: Human trafficking, a form of modern-day slavery, is becoming as common as the sale of illegal drugs and weapons. Human trafficking is such a hidden crime it is difficult to know exactly how many cases of human trafficking arise in Massachusetts.
As a global institution, the Catholic Church, has denounced this horrific crime because it constitutes an offense against human dignity and fundamental human rights. Pentecost is considered the birthday of the church. On the first Pentecost the Holy Spirit enflamed the hearts of the apostles to go to every corner of the earth with the message of Jesus. In this spirit, the Boston Unit of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious has set aside Sunday, May 31, Pentecost 2009, as an opportunity to express solidarity with all who are working to put an end to human trafficking.
In particular, we express our support of Massachusetts, Senate Bill 58. The effects of this bill are far reaching. Among the benefits of this bill are the establishment of a Victims of Human Trafficking Trust Fund and a Human Trafficking Safe House, to provide emergency shelter for victims. The bill will also enhance sentencing guidelines for parties found guilty of trafficking and will require the court to provide restitution to victims. Additionally, the bill would establish an Anti-Trafficking Task Force led by the Office of the Attorney General and the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Today women religious all over the world are addressing the crime of human trafficking. Our religious congregations have NGO representatives at the United Nations who address the issue at a global level. We women religious leaders in the greater Boston area are committed to speak out locally because we are human beings, because we are women, because we are women religious with a history of Catholic social teaching, and because we live and work in the Boston area where the trafficking trade is a real though hidden crime.
Women religious are well known in the greater Boston area as educators and health care professionals. The Boston Unit of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious [LCWR] includes sixteen Congregations representing over a thousand women religious in the greater Boston area.
We encourage all people of greater Boston to support Massachusetts Senate Bill 58 and be aware of how the passage of this bill will help victims and survivors of human trafficking. The reality of thousands of our brothers and sisters laboring in modern day slavery compels us to speak out today in an effort to let the people of Massachusetts know that they, too, can support this bill, serve the survivors of this crime, and stop human trafficking.

Development

 ËËËËËËËË

The Missionary Franciscan Sisters Development Program is working to help the community fulfill its mission to spread pax et bonum  (peace and all good) around the world.  Through the support of friends and family, it is possible for the Sisters to continue their good works in a broad range of ministries.

Some individuals who have guided and changed your life stand out as you reflect upon the past.  Many have been women who were mentors, mothers, friends and colleagues.  These women have taught you to be life long learners and responsible Christians.  We are the Missionary Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (MFIC), a community of Roman Catholic Sisters, founded in 1873 by Elizabeth Hayes, (Mother Mary Ignatius of Jesus) a convert from Anglicanism, who began our first mission in Belle Prairie, Minnesota, USA.  We number approximately 360 sisters worldwide.  We seek to serve in the Church, especially among the poor and marginalized peoples of our world.

Our missions are on the East Coast of the USA and in nine other countries worldwide (Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Egypt, England, Ireland, Italy, Papua New Guinea, and Peru).  Our Sisters are involved in a variety of ministries: social and pastoral services, education, catechetical instruction, foreign missions, health care, prison ministry and others.

We can not do what we do without the support of our friends and family.  You are an integral part of our mission and the people the Missionary Franciscan Sisters serve.  An important first step is assuring the continuation and growth of these ministries is through the generosity of individual donors.  The Missionary Franciscan Sisters gratefully receive your donation to help continue the mission of supporting our sisters and their ministries.

Planned Giving & The Society of St. Clare

Planned giving is a form of financial stewardship.  It is a way of helping the donor’s chosen philanthropy to further its mission and its work while at the same time meeting the donor’s estate and financial plans.  Planned giving can include gifts made during the donor’s lifetime or bequests made through a donor’s will, or both.  Some planned gifts are cash gifts, while others are made in a number of different ways.  Gifts can also be made as memorials to someone special, living or deceased.  Gifts can be of any size, and no amount is too small.

The Society of St. Clare

The Society of St. Clare honors all of those donors who have made planned gifts to the Missionary Franciscan Sisters.  St. Clare of Assisi was the close friend and spiritual student of St. Francis, who followed him in living a humble life for Christ, demonstrating a love of prayer and a dedication to the poor.

Although the reality of the prospect of dying is not something most of us like to think about, everyone regardless of age or financial status should have an estate plan.  Without a will or a trust, even your immediate family may not receive the bequests you intended.  Death brings us the promise of the next life, and also presents each of us with an amazing opportunity to make an impact in this world by leaving a legacy to an organization we really believe in.

During your lifetime you can also make outright gifts of appreciated stocks or other securities, real estate, life insurance policies, or other assets.  These are some of the most simple and effective ways to exercise stewardship.  In some cases, planned gifts can also benefit from charitable incentives that have been placed in the federal tax laws.  You should consult your legal and tax advisors to see which type of gift would be most appropriate in your personal situation.

The Missionary Franciscans Sisters wish to thank and honor the members of the Society of St. Clare.  Upon becoming a member of the Society you will be accorded with these benefits:
The commitment from our community that your gifts will help to continue our missions and ministries
An invitation to a special event in honor of Society members
If desired, you will be assigned a prayer partner within the community
Upon learning of your death, you will be remembered at a series of masses offered for the repose of souls

When you write or revise your will and estate plans, please consider a bequest to the Missionary Franciscan Sisters.  You can donate a percentage of your estate, or give a specific amount, or bequest a part of or the entirety of the residue of your estate after other beneficiaries have been provided for.  Below are examples of language that you and your attorney might include in your will:

I give the following sums indicated:
To the Missionary Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, 790 Centre Street, Newton, Massachusetts 02458, the sum of $________dollars to be used for its general purposes.

OR

I give, devise, or bequeath the rest, residue or remainder of my estate, whether real or personal, as follows:
(state percentage) to the Missionary Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, 790 Centre Street, Newton, Massachusetts 02458, for its general purposes.

Once you have provided for your family and for the loved ones in your life, we hope that you will consider leaving a bequest to the Missionary Franciscan Sisters.  Your gift will help ensure that the Sisters will be able to continue their missions and ministries, and that they will be cared for during their retirement years.

To learn more about how to remember the Missionary Franciscan Sisters in your estate plan and become a member of the Society of St. Clare, please contact the Development Office at (617) 527-1004 or via email at development@mficusa.org.

If you have already provided for the Missionary Franciscan Sisters in your estate plan, could you please let us know so that we can thank you and include you in the Society of St. Clare.

Appreciated Securities/ Stock

Do you have appreciated stocks in a brokerage account or in certificate form? A gift of stock that has grown in value will provide support for the Missionary Franciscan Sisters at the full market value and with no capital gains tax paid by the donor. Donors can take a charitable deduction on their federal income tax for the market value of the securities at the time of stock transfer. If you would like specific information about transferring securities, please call       (617) 527-1004.

Independent Retirement Accounts (IRAs)

The value of many estates can incur federal, and possibly state, estate taxes as qualified retirement plans accumulate. Designating a percentage of assets from the plan to the Missionary Franciscan Sisters can minimize the taxes due on retirement plan assets.

Charitable Remainder Trust

A charitable remainder trust can be established with cash, appreciated securities, real estate or other marketable assets and managed by a trustee. With this trust, a charitable remainder trust provides income until your death (or the death of a beneficiary), or for a specified term of years. When the trust expires, the principal becomes available to the Missionary Franciscan Sisters.

Charitable Gift Annuity

When you make a gift of a charitable gift annuity to the Missionary Franciscan Sisters, the sisters reinvest the assets and guarantees to pay you a fixed income for life (and if desired, for another beneficiary's lifetime). Upon the death of the last beneficiary, the principal is available to the Missionary Franciscan Sisters. The tax advantages include charitable deduction, income tax savings and estate tax savings.

Real Estate

Real estate is an ideal asset for many methods of charitable giving because it appreciates at a higher rate of inflation. Depending on the giving method, you can benefit from income tax savings, capital gains tax savings, or estate and gift tax savings, while also possibly increasing your annual income.

Gifts in Kind

The Missionary Franciscan Sisters may accept in-kind gifts as charitable contributions which are donations of property other than cash and securities.  Such items could include furnishings, computers, books, works of art, etc.

Life Insurance

You can name the Missionary Franciscan Sisters the beneficiary (or co-beneficiary) on an existing life insurance policy. In the event of your death, the Missionary Franciscan Sisters receive the proceeds of the policy as a bequest, generating federal estate tax benefits. If you also make the sisters owners of the policy and relinquish all incidents of ownership, you can claim an income tax deduction for the cash surrender value.

Elizabeth Hayes Grant Fund
On the centennial of the death of their foundress, Mother Mary Ignatius (born Elizabeth Hayes), the Missionary Franciscan Sisters established the Elizabeth Hayes Grant Fund in 1994.  The fund was established to carry on her dream of helping the materially poor, and it forwards the community’s call to be sensitive to the current problems of justice, peace, and development of underprivileged people.  Grants are awarded every year to a wide range of programs which serve the poor in a variety of geographic areas.
